Diablo 3 Ultimate Evil Edition Review

Diablo 3 Ultimate Evil Edition Review

Third time is the charm! First there was Diablo 3, then came Reaper of Souls, now the Ultimate Evil Edition of Diablo 3 for current gen consoles. The updates and tweaks have paid off and this is a fun exciting hack and slash game for the PS4 and Xbox One.

This action/RPG supports 1080p definition and 60 fps fairly smoothly especially when considering the amount of monsters on screen and fast paced which ensues. There will be hiccups when a lot is happening on screen but overall, not too bad, not too bad at all. Graphics are not stellar, but one does not expect ultimate graphics from a Diablo game even if the edition is named Ultimate Evil. What counts most is the fighting and the loot.

The loot system and drop rate have been greatly improved for this release, which is waht we expect from this game. Finding better and better stuff to equip and dispatch hell’s minions efficiently. Players of earlier editions originally complained about the loot being dished out and Blizzard has responded with Diablo 3 Ultimate Evil Edition. Now there is plenty to go around even when playing with three of your friends competing at one time.

The hack and slash action is superb and this game is right at home using a controller on the current consoles. To be honest, clicking away on the PC version is just downright irritating in this reviewers eyes. I actually prefer this game on the consoles even though the PC version may run smoother overall.

The UI is well done and thought out. The menus are complex but you will get used to how they work quickly and it makes the game more fun to easily navigate these menus. There is a fourth passive slot now also, which is nice. Loot can be quickly assessed for usability with green and red arrows. This is helpful because of the amount of goodies you will find amongst the carnage you will deal out.

Perhaps one of the best features is the ability to have up to four people dispatching monsters and scrambling for loot in the mega fun local co-op. The game is enjoyable in solo pay sessions, but the local co-op is a blast. Not too many games offer local co-op party play in this genre and it is a big winner. Friends screaming at each other and the television can be just outright hilarious at times.

The story in the campaign mode is thin (only 5 acts)and somewhat simplistic, but it gets the job done. Anyway, who needs big long involved stories when there is fighting to be had and monsters to kill. You will kill a LOT of monsters, and then you will kill more.

All characters are fun to play and can effectively deal out the necessary damage. The new edition is the Crusader and it seems like a good all around class. I prefer the Barbarian myself, but that’s just me. Blizzard has also made it easy to port your old characters into this version as well. That’s welcomed if you have spent hours developing a character on previous versions.

After the campaign is done there is still replay value in this title thanks to the adventure mode. This opens up after you finish the campaign and allows for even more loot and level up opportunities. Featuring 25 missions per map and even more fun available with random dungeons spawning as you collect rifts this is welcomed end game content.

I rank Diablo 3 Ultimate Evil Edition as a 8.5 out of ten stars for the fun hack and slash and the local co-op, making it a superior party game.
